The Risk Assessment for COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Castle Certificate Course covers detailed information about current COSHH Regulations and how to complete a compliant Risk Assessment.

Who Should Attend

The COSHH Regulations (which apply to all EU companies) includes a requirement for employers to carry out an assessment of the risks presented to their employees through exposure to hazardous substances. This course is for any company that may have such a need, which may mean working with an occupational hygienist to guide you in the areas you need to cover. Health and Safety personnel, manufacturing staff or engineers are all potential attendees although no previous experience is required so the course will suit anyone who is responsible for such assessments.

Aims and Objectives

The course is designed to provide the skills necessary for compliance with COSHH regulations. It may be that you will need to work alongside an occupational hygienist to provide air sampling and to identify some of the hazards. Looking at control measures is a very important issue, and the experience of the delegates and lecturer is drawn upon here. On completion of the course the attendees will be able to construct a Risk Assessment for compliance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations 2005. We will also touch on the requirements of air sampling although this is covered in more depth on our Air Sampling for COSHH course.

  • To look in-depth at the Regulations and associated Approves Codes of Practise
  • Enable delegates to understand and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for substances found in the workplace.
  • To give an insight into the effects of hazardous substances on people
  • To facilitate an understanding of the basics of air sampling and monitoring
  • To show how air sampling results should be interpreted for compliance with the Regulations taking into account any relevant Workplace Exposure Limits
  • To provide an overview of potential control measures
  • To equip delegates with the knowledge and skills required to create and maintain a risk assessment for COSHH

Course Overview

This 1 day course comprises  morning and afternoon  modules, which are structured in the following way.

Module 1: Morning

The syllabus for the morning module will include an overview of the requirements of the COSHH Regulations, Enforcement Authorities, Workplace Exposure Limits, classification and forms of hazardous substances, control techniques and reporting protocols and risk assessment revision. There is a practical element to the course to provide experience of dealing with Safety Data sheets and Risk Assessment templates.

Module 2: Afternoon Assessment and Test

Assessment for this course is based on a practical demonstration of your understanding and interpretation of Safety Data Sheets as well as a simple test of the information provided during the course. Further content will cover Material Safety data Sheet, Workplace Exposure Limited, Control measures, introduction to Air Sampling and a Consolidation Exercise.  This is not an exam and re-testing is possible following clarification from your tutor.

Further Learning

Our two-day Practical Air Sampling for COSHH course is the ideal follow-on from this risk assessment course and is designed for anyone who wants to work closely with their occupational hygienist to provide supplemental or on-going air sampling, testing of control measures or simply the ability to understand and interpret the results of air sampling to incorporate into your risk assessment.
