How to carry out Air Sampling for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2005?

The Personal Air Sampling for COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Castle Certificate Course covers information about current COSHH Regulations and how to carry out air sampling and monitoring for dust, gas, and vapours in the workplace.

Who Should Attend

The COSHH Regulations (which apply to all UK companies) includes a requirement for employers to carry out an assessment of the risks presented to their employees through exposure to hazardous substances. Where there is an identified risk, then it is mandatory to measure the exposure levels using air sampling. This course is for anyone who needs to work with their occupational hygienist to carry out air sampling. It may be that you want to provide supplementary or on-going sampling or to test the effectiveness of your control measures and you will probably want to know how to incorporate the results of air sampling into your COSHH risk assessments. Health and Safety personnel, manufacturing staff or engineers are all potential attendees although no previous experience is required so the course will suit anyone who can fulfil this role.

Aims and Objectives

The course is designed to provide the skills necessary to carry out air sampling as part of your compliance of the COSHH Regulations. The practical nature of the course means plenty of hands-on experience to complement the theory, the basics of air sampling and monitoring for dust, gases and vapours will be studied as well as a look at the regulations with respect to air sampling. On completion of the course the attendees will be able to work alongside any occupational hygiene provider to carry out a monitoring programme appropriate to their own company requirements.

  • To look at the regulations regarding air sampling and the requirements therein
  • To facilitate an understanding of the basics of air sampling and monitoring
  • To develop an understanding of the various sampling methods available, such that an appropriate monitoring strategy can be drawn up to suit individual company situations
  • To give a practical insight into air sampling and monitoring
  • To show how sample results should be interpreted for compliance with the Regulations considering any relevant Workplace Exposure Limits
  • Incorporating Air Sampling results into your COSHH risk assessments.
  • To provide an overview of potential control measures and how to assess their effectiveness using air sampling
  • To equip delegates with the knowledge and skills required to write a report detailing their air sampling results

Course Overview

The course consists of 2 modules, which are structured in the following way.

Module 1 of Two Day Course

The syllabus for module 1 will include an overview of the requirements of the COSHH Regulations for air sampling, Workplace Exposure Limits, sampling methodologies, control techniques and reporting protocols. There is a heavy practical element to the course to provide experience of measurement and sampling techniques as well as familiarisation with instrumentation and sampling equipment.

Module 2 Air Sampling Report - Certification

An optional report can be produced by delegates and can either be based on data taken from the course or from air sampling carried out at work. Your tutor will then provide feedback on what is good and what you might be able to improve upon.

Further Learning

This course is ideally supplemented with our one-day COSHH Risk Assessment course, which is for anyone who is responsible for the companies Assessments and COSHH compliance. Once you have a good understanding of the results of your air sampling, then these must be incorporated into your Risk Assessments along with information from a substance’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and other regulatory requirements, all of which is covered on this course.
